In Revelation 1, we are introduced to the entire content of the book. Everything happens through a vision that John has on the island of Patmos about what was to come: from Jesus to John — and from John to us. This vision of the glorified Christ is the crucial point of the entire work. Without it in the first chapter, the subsequent prophecies and judgments would lose their foundation.
The Power of Revelation
What happens to John is what we call, in theology, a theophany: the visible, temporary, and tangible manifestation of God (or a deity) to human beings. The purpose of this work, therefore, is the very revelation of Jesus Christ. Our Lord Jesus is presented in a glorious way, pointing to everything that will unfold throughout the book. The expression “revelation of Jesus Christ,” as explained by Professor Dr. Valtair Miranda in his book Apocalyptic Spirituality, aims to indicate that the content of this revelation is Jesus and His work. This work consists of the implementation of the Kingdom of Jesus, which will become clearer as we progress in our reading.
It is interesting to note that many readers end up finding Revelation very difficult to understand, as if the book had been written to be enigmatic; but that is not the truth. The original Greek term is apokalypsis, which means “unveiling,” that is, revealing what is hidden. Therefore, the Book of Revelation does not seek to make life difficult for its readers; on the contrary, its goal is to reveal the person of Jesus.
Why is the Book of Revelation Difficult to Understand?
In the context of the church, it is common to notice that few people dive into the study of Revelation because they consider it “too difficult.” This is a premise that has been held for a long time. It is a fact that the book presents many enigmatic figures, but each one of them has an important meaning in the text and needs to be interpreted. A point to highlight is that the interpretation of this book requires great attention, as it was not meant to be read strictly literally. Figures such as terrifying horses, dragons, and beasts emerging from the sea point to other realities, which can be spiritual, religious, historical, political, or social, as described by Dr. Valtair Miranda.
In other words, there is indeed a way to read Revelation and understand its content; we just need to use the right tools to interpret it correctly. Therefore, my tip for you who wish to understand more about this book is to keep in mind that, although it requires a greater effort, interpreting it is not an impossible task. The purpose of Revelation is precisely to unveil and present what was hidden from our understanding. In your studies, seek the help of good commentaries and explanatory videos on the subject.

Revelation is a Book of Hope
I must highlight a fundamental point: Revelation is a book of hope. I hear accounts from some people who say its content causes fear. I have even heard comments that some people avoid opening it to read because they find it terrifying. However, when you read its 22 chapters over and over again, and lean in to understand what is happening throughout the text, you begin to realize that the book points to a future that generates, in the reader’s heart, a profound hope amidst a chaotic world.
Of course, the work describes a time when the world will be turned “upside down” by the great events to come; but Revelation shows us that, one day, suffering will be replaced by joy, and death will be defeated forever. The day will come when all suffering, pain, injustice, and wickedness will be completely destroyed, never to exist again. Therefore, Revelation wants to show that there will be a great divine intervention responsible for a complete transformation, after which the everlasting government of the Lord Jesus Christ will be established.
